Meets Guitar/Taunus (split 7")MEETS GUITAR is the solo project of Gavin Baker of Billy Mahonie/Glider/Jet
Johnson. From the front porches of the Appalachians to the smoky pubs of Camden,
Gavin creates a kind of London pastoral sound, rich with two chord overdubbed
acoustic guitars and mandolins.
In 1997 a 4-track home recording system provided some vocal relief from the
hectic instrumental lifestyle of Billy Mahonie. Since 2001 a swanky new 8-track
unit has enabled some of these back-room antics to reach a quality fit for public
consumption.
The debut single was released on Johnny Kane Records earlier this year and frequent
live performances in London and as far a field as Stoke-on-Trent have followed!
An album involving collaborations with colleagues past and present is in the
pipeline.
TAUNUS play acoustic instrumental music. This is their first release. The band
consists of two Berliner guitarists, Jan Thoben and Jochen Briesen. They are
joined by a variety of other Berlin-based musicians using instruments like vibraphone,
kalimba, harmonium and banjo.
Several elements are recognizable in their music: from fingerpicking-folkmusic-fragments
to minimal music and post-rock. A focus on structural means of rhythm and time
signatures can be found alongside open tuned harmonics.
Jan Thoben and Jochen Briesen also play in GASTON. Their debut single came out
on Becalmed Records in 2001. Jochen Briesen's solo project SEMUIN combines acoustic
instrumentation with experimental electronics.
