- Ben Calvert - The Leafy Underground (limited DVD packaging sold out, avaliable
now in jewel case)Ben writes and plays modern urban ballads, with an indie-pop dimension. Within
are tales of modern life's trials and tribulations, where themes of pessimism
and tragedy meet with optimistic, bright-sound instrumentation. As well as this
form of modern soul music, he also plays what is best described as 'dark folk'.
Ben's debut recording the state of travel EP was released on Bearos Records
to unanimous praise worldwide. John Peel gave the song "Leeds for the Winter"
it's first airplay on his Radio One show, and other national radio stations
in Europe followed.
Since he started playing live in late 2000 Ben has notched up over 80 gigs in
towns and cities around England. He has played Radio One Live in the City in
Birmingham and Brighton, and has played solo support to touring NYC Anti-folk
artists Lach and Hamell On Trial.
"A strange Syd Barrett/Roy Harper hybrid is Ben Calvert.
Lovely, melodic, melancholia. This is music and words for the disenchanted and
is as good as a big bag of really good things."
