Papa November - From the start line CD (AVAILABLE MAIL ORDER - IN THE SHOPS
SOON)PAPA NOVEMBER is also the name of Midland-based duo Katy Acquaye and Stuart Tonge. They began creating electronic music in 1997 and released a single on the Static Caravan record label in 1999. Their work is divided between the CD friendly vocal and rhythm tracks and more abstract fractured pieces for art installations and events.
FROM THE START LINE is a wonderfully atmospheric feast of hip-hop beats and
electronic soundscapes. Strong female vocals focus on the singer's memories
of a childhood spent in Ghana, West Africa. The music reflects the duos eclectic
taste in music and that thing about never being able to make your mind up about
what sort of music you want to create. Something like Portishead would be a
lazy reference - there are edges of dark experimentation here - but it probably
puts you in the right ball park.

Meets Guitar/Taunus split 7" (NOW IN SHOPS)MEETS GUITAR
is the solo project of Gavin Baker of Billy Mahonie/Glider/Jet Johnson. From
the front porches of the Appalachians to the smoky pubs of Camden, Gavin creates
a kind of London pastoral sound, rich with two chord overdubbed acoustic guitars
and mandolins.

TAUNUS play acoustic instrumental music. This is their first release. The band consists of two Berliner guitarists, Jan Thoben and Jochen Briesen. They are joined by a variety of other Berlin-based musicians using instruments like vibraphone, kalimba, harmonium and banjo.
Several elements are recognizable in their music: from fingerpicking-folkmusic-fragments to minimal music and post-rock. A focus on structural means of rhythm and time signatures can be found alongside open tuned harmonics.

Baxxter - The Girls are looking good this summerThis is Baxxter's second single. The band are sounding stronger than ever in
these new studio recordings.
Urgent spitting angst ridden energy, real punk rock - vitriolic rawness that's
got places to go, people to see, faces to shout at - "you're becoming a
caricature of everything you used to hate," spits the voice. (Review of
promo by Org Records)

CrazyFace - Brick Wall (CD single)This is the debut single by this incredible Birmingham five piece. Their post-punk-pop can be so catchy it hurts and yet equally as heartfelt that you want to weep! The live performances have become some of the best on the local scene with front man and dynamic vocalist Simon Pearce. Now is the time for live favourite Brick Wall to be given a national release after the demo was played on Steve Lamaq's Evening Session.
"Vocals that have hints of Thom Yorke or Jeff Buckley about them yet the
track is faster and more angular then either mentioned. CrazyFace are certainly
a band worth checking out in a climate of stale copycat bands." Rhythm
& Booze
"Their sound comes from a love of The Clash, The Stooges and Muse."

Their mixture of quiet introspection and raging epics has often seen them
lumped in with Mogwai and the rest of the post-rock crowd. San Lorenzo offer
so much more with strains of Yo La Tengo, The Fall and Talking Heads.

The Regulars - This is the soundTheir second single continues to showcase their intense guitar sounds with

Bearos in 1999. The band have taken a six-month break and have returned with
a new drummer and a harder, more focussed sound. Last year Stevie Chick described
their fractured melodic hardcore to be the highlight of Fierce Panda's Cutting
Hedges compilation. This release sees their sound come of age and their
reputation cemented as the accessible side of the Birmingham Emo-core scene.

Loops, samples and sequencers - one tracks a bit hip-hoppy, the other more sedate and soundscapey. Only 300.

San Lorenzo - Sports BiscuitsFourth release from this West Midlands trio. They've supported Idlewild on tour and been supported by John Peel and Steve Lamaq both of whom rewarded their debut album, Nothing new ever works, with frequent plays. Unlike many of the loud/quiet, post-whatever bands San Lorenzo have a real veriety of moods and sounds at their disposal. The single features some of the band's mellower moments.

Bearos012
Baxxter - Russian Song The Baxxter gang have finally tamed their live sound. The tracks still sound
like they are bursting out of the studio leaving a trail of carnage in their
wake. Sort of Seafood in a head on collision with early Smashing Pumpkins. A
pure manic thrash pop thrill.
Bearos011
The Regulars - Lie down and fight Birmingham's laziest indie pop band The Regulars finally release their debut single. 'Lie down and fight' is an anthem for the workshy and a raucous hymn to public transport. The b-side, 'North star', finds the band in a more pensive and twinkly state of mind. The Regulars' combination of intense guitar sounds with C86-era melodicism and pop sensibilities has turned a few heads on the Brum scene, and 'Lie down and fight' is your chance to turn on, tune in, and pull a sicky.
